"Safety" by Ken Magalnik

No other known race had more of an affect on reality than us, the Homo Sapience. And while the accomplishment on the outside are remarkable and can in no way be ignored, on the inside we have changed little since our prehistoric ancestors. For all our reasoning we are still the same frightened, instinct driven mammals we were some 165 thousand years ago. Safety was always a main concern, and the driving force in our lives. When one danger to our survival disappeared we simply created the next, so as not to extinguish the main force that drives us forward.

The most successful way we have invented so far to ensure our security is the concept of safety in numbers. We have become like ants, clanking in groups, spreading the responsibility outward, so that we do not have to deal with the guilt and the fear inside us.

Even this security was not enough for some of us. believing members of our own species to be a danger to our survival, a power structure was created. A structure where one particularly scared primate could control as many others as possible, thus ensuring his own survival.

As such structures grew larger they could not be maintained by sheer force, since it is our instinct to be free, and the sub consciousness rebelled against such an abuse. Thus ideals were created, another way to mask the fear that has driven us to such a situation in the first place. And it is then, when we began believing those lies that we have become chained by our delusions. Such a system makes slaves of men, destroys are independence, our freedom, and our security. We have simply replaced one fear, one danger, with another.

To cover up for this most of us chose simply to ignore that which is going on around us. We have turned our eyes from the abuses going on around us, and concentrated on the daily routine, making the chains around us stronger than ever. No one of us, regardless of his/her place in the power structure is free any longer. We are all victims to the words, concepts, we have made up so that we don't have to look at the truth.

As this machine grows, as the reality tunnel narrows, as each of us is being further and further reduced to a mechanized automation, our sub consciousness takes one final stand. People from every layer of our culture are taking drastic steps to disrupt the machine that controls us. People commit hideous and needless acts of violence, simply because they feel it is the only decision they can make for themselves. Must hundreds die for one man's moment of freedom?

We have conquered the planet, and are on our way to conquer the universe, we have destroyed most that threatened us. Must we maintain the system that oppresses us? What is its benefit? Why not shed the chains and face the issues inside us?
