WAR NO MATTER WHAT

an open letter to Congress

It appears we are going to war, no matter what, because this administration wants it. What happened to Congress? What happened to the United Nations? I thought that a nation is only to use force in response to an attack on itself, or if approved by the Security Council. Are we going to withdraw from the UN? Are we withdrawing from the need to have any allies (other than Tony Blaire's 51st State)?

Even those nations who share borders with Iraq are opposed to the US attacking Iraq.

This war is a bad idea for the following reasons: because of the suffering it would inflict on our soldiers, because it will destabilize the region, because it will distract us from domestic issues, corporate abuses at home, because it will hurt small businesses, and most of all, because it is not necessary.

This posturing by the Bush administration looks like election time distraction. And the propaganda seems to be working. The Democrats in Congress are about to rollover once again. Why is no one taking a stand? Is the evidence of Saddam Husseins' misdeeds so compelling? I have not heard one shred of compelling evidence in the mainstream media to put our nation in greater danger of more terrorist actions. This, I believe will be the result of our new doctrine of pre-emption.

Iraq is not a friend of Al Qaeda, but this may give them reason to be. We have continued to bomb Iraq spuriously for 12 years, imposed sanctions. Iraq may at some future time rebuild and become a threat, but is this justification for war? In this case, we should be at war with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, numerous other nations around the world that MIGHT at some future time become a threat.

This Bush edict of pre-emptive war sets up a bad precedent. Forced regime change is exactly the kind of thing Bush said he would not do during the Presidential debates with Al Gore. It is bad for international relations and it is bad for we the people. Congress is the only voice we have; it is Congress' duty to declare war and send our children to fight, endanger our citizens at home, and then only after careful debate and verification of its necessity. It is also Congress' duty to represent us; last time I looked we still have on paper a representative democracy.

Boxed into a corner with nothing to lose, Saddam Hussein might be tempted to use a weapon of mass destruction -- that is, if he has one. Perhaps this is what the administration is hoping for.

Call the President's bluff! Please, show restraint, respect international opinion, and the voice of our people. I, and many other Americans, oppose this war at this time.
