The Patriot Act: a Petition
To: U.S. Congress

We, the undersigned, hereby declare that anti-terrorism legislationpassed by our US Congress since the tragic and murderous September 11, 2001 attacks on our nation, seriously damage and infringe upon the constitutional protections that are enshrined in our Bill of Rights. We declare that it is not patriotic, but rather Un-American to destroy the very freedoms which cause Americans to love their country. We
declare that open government is critical to democracy and that by imposing new levels of secrecy our government appears less trustworthy and lessens the people’s ability to make informed decisions about
government.

We declare that lessening the strength of the judicial and legislative branches of our government, while simultaneously giving completely unlimited powers to the executive branch does damage to our American principle of separation of powers.

We oppose the use of secret military tribunals at which a person is afforded no independent defense counsel and could be sentenced to die and executed without the knowledge and approval of the American people.

We oppose the president’s orders to lock down presidential records, thus denying our ability to judge the actions of the executive.

We oppose the indefinite imprisonment of foreign nationals if no criminal charge has been placed against them. We further oppose the holding of any person without publicly declaring the crime they are charged with. We oppose the “sneak and peek” provision of the PATRIOT Act, which crushes our 4th amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure by denying citizens their right to be aware that their property is to be searched and their right to protest such search if the warrant is out of order.

We oppose the collection of private business records by order of secret courts and the muzzling of those citizens who receive such orders from speaking publicly about them. This is a violation of both the 1st and 4th amendment.

We oppose the PATRIOT Act’s destruction of e-mail and Internet privacy. In addition, the sharing of such data indiscriminately among any number of government agencies and even foreign governments is patently intolerable.

For these reasons, we demand the immediate repeal of the PATRIOT Act. We call upon our elected representatives to act in accordance with the Constitution of the United States and to undo these actions which violate the core principles of America.

The USA Patriot Act, passed in a wave of hysteria after the September 11 attacks, creates a second terrorist assault on American citizens - but this time the perpetrator is our own U.S. Congress.

On October 26, 2001, President George Bush signed into law the "Uniting and Strengthening America" by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (H.R. 3162, the USA
PATRIOT Act).

Rushed through Congress with little debate and even less public input, the USA PATRIOT Act seriously erodes any last constitutional protections we might have left, particularly for immigrants, while giving the government new power to label dissent as "terrorist activity".

The new Patriot Act is a clear example on how the U.S. GOVT attempts to justify it's actions through continuous repression. By using the words "anti-terrorism", and "national security", YOU become the target. Not the terrorists. The real terrorists are the politricks, FBI and CIA, who build their 'hit list' to enforce their policies, target activists, and people of color to further wage their blood-thirsty war.

With the swift stroke of pen, our so-called rights become disintegrated. Anyone who disagrees with the brutal, unjust policies of the U.S is now rendered a "terrorist" in the name of "national security". Fascism couldn't make itself more obvious. Bush said it himself, it's a very black-and-white situation, "you're either with us, or against us". Remind you of Nazi Germany?

Thousands of Arab people, South Asian people and Muslims have been violently attacked inside the United States. Homes, mosques and stores have been defaced. People of Arab and South Asian descent have been put off airplanes. Main media outlets, like the Wall Street Journal, have called for legitimizing racial profiling. This is racism pure and simple. After Timothy McVeigh blew up the Oklahoma City Federal building in 1995, killing 168 people, there was no campaign to take white males off of airplanes because people felt "uncomfortable" in their presence. White men were not rounded up and held without charges. Since September 11, however, more than 1,000 people, mostly of Middle East origin, have been detained, many without charges. But that's not all, activists have also been the target, with the most recent attack on the founder of Raise the Fist, where heavily armed FBI agents raided the home and shut down the web site, he was then arrested in NY at the WEF demonstrations after being targeted by secret service. After 30 hours in jail and being interogated by U.S. political police, RTF founder was turned over to the feds and incarcerated in 'high-security' MCC federal prison for 13 days before charges were dropped, "pending further investigation".
