Dear Charles,
Having just read Alexander Cockburn's article
in the Los Angeles Times this morning on
your stand on genetically modified crops,
I feel compelled to write in support.
Although I am most disquieted on the idea of
introducing "Frankenstein foods" onto
the public's dinner plate by stealth,
I feel that Prime Minister Blair's "order" to
close down your web site is even more worrying.
This is an appalling violation of the right to free
speech together with
the unfettered dissemination of vitally pertinant information,
especially when it comes to matters of
personal and public health. Blair's
attitude is more at home in, for example,
the old Soviet Union, China or Myannmar,
and absolutely NOT in a country which has
any pretence at democracy and decency.
As here in the United States, it seems as if
there is no controlling the corporate juggernaut
as it rolls inexorably onward. Multinationals,
are becoming increasingly immune to any form
of policing or accountability to the public,
and are gradually replacing the role of legitimately elected
representatives seemingly all over the world,
(as well as moulding the public perception of
history).
When our supposedly elected representatives
suspend the most basic of democratic rights
in favour of not inflicting damage on the bottom line
of a transnational corporation, it's goodbye to
civilization and hello to something very sinister
indeed. Dare I call it Fascism?
I am very aware of the tactics and methods
of Monsanto and others. Please carry on
your fight; it is the only moral
and ethical thing to do in the face of
jackboot corporate control of society and
the frankly horrifying implications this
type of regime could have on the entire
planet within the not too distant future.
Your very sincerely,
Nicholas D. Havercroft Green.
